  • 1.  CA Spectrum MIB for Comtech satelletite modem

    Posted Oct 15, 2012 02:11 AM
    Dear All,

One of our customers is using Comtech CDM 650 EF data modem for their links. I am not able to find any support for this device in CA Spectrum. If i get the MIBs from
the Comtech manufacturers , i will laod the MIB in spectrum. Here i have some questions:

    1. on the comtech device i need to enable the snmp but which version it supports for v1, v2, or v3, for the correct monitoring. (not only generic snmp device)
    2. on CA spectrum we should only load the MIB???? or is there anything to do more.
    3. The MIB is loaded in general means applicable for all devices or should i load the MIB for specific device like comtech 650 EF data device.

    Regards,

    Umair

    Hi Umair,

1.The snmp support should be confirmed from the vendor or from the device administrator.
    2. Once the Mib is compiled successfully you need to map the traps if you wants alarms for respective alerts sent by the device. The default alarms are triggered without these mapping but if you have traps sent by the device for specific errors and thn needs alarms for these you need to map them using Mib tools.
    3. Load all the Mibs you have with respect to this devices.

Even after loading you cannot expect Spectrum to have a full pledged monitoring of all the features. It all depends on the info present in the MIb.

    HI,

can u guide me the mapping procedure????? I have all the MIBS loaded via MIB Tool successfully. I can run the SNMP get request on the IP, it works fine and gets the
exact value, as in the WEB interface of Comtech modem. BUT on spectrum side where i can get the SNMP traps. How i can confirm that traps are sending by
the device to spectrum and spectrum is recieving the alarms traps. Where i can see the traps on spectrum???
In MIB tool there is "contact criteria", i use the IP and click on contact, the line becomes green. What is this for???

    Regards,

To guide you in the process of mapping the information in Spectrum is a very large task. I would recommend that you look into CA's class on customizing Spectrum. You'll get some hands on in making these changes.

For your short term needs, there are some things that you can do to get started. The document "Event Configuration User Guide" gives some good information on how to process events and manipulate them such as creating alarms.

To start with, you can use MibTools to load your mibs and then the "map" tab will let you map them to events or create attributes. Once you have them as events, you can use the Event Configuration tool to make those events create alarms.

    Umair,

Here are few things which you need to check after compiling the Mibs

    1. Discover the device in Spectrum.
    2. Make sure you are able to access all the tabs in the component detail panel for this device.
    3. Now next thing is to try sending traps from the device to Spectrum.
    4. If a trap is mapped in Spectrum ,respective event is generated on this device upon trap reception.
5 If the trap is not mapped you get an event with the message " Unknown alert received " kind of thing on this device in Spectrum. This is meant that the trap is not mapped in Spectrum.
    6. Now inorder to map the trap get the OID for trap type from this unknown event message.
    7. Open Mib tools -> Click on the loaded mib in the left -> Click on map tab in the right top panel --> Go to the trap support window in the bottom panel -> Here you see the traps with respect to this Mib -> Select the trap type using the OID taken in step 6 and filter -> Click on + symbol -> This will open a new window with the event code for this trap -> Click on ok. Now a even will be created for this trap.
    8. Go to the event configuration editor adn filter for this event using the event code and then insert the even message, map an alarm etc.
    9. Save this from file tab in ECE.
    10. Now try sending the same trap from the end device to see if you get this new event onto this device.
    11. Repeat the same for all unmapped traps.

Before doing this i suggest you to go through the Event configuration Guide.

    cheers

Moving this thread to the Spectrum category since it has nothing to do with RA/NFA.
