  • 1.  Should rally be used as employee performance measuring tool?

In my company one of the manager want to use rally actual output as an employee performace tool though other manager differ. We understand rally is a agile project progress management tool but not sure whether using it as a individual performace is fair or not during PDR.  Any advice?

if it can be used, is there any report which helps in reporting data about how many hours team member actually worked during a period of time

    Hi Gagan,

I suppose one could drum up a custom application to dig into Rally data.  But as with all metrics, what are you trying to find?

One idea might be (for dev/qa resources) to query all the stories to find how many people edited or created a story for a specific feature?  Then use a % to say DevBob worked 20% of his time on Project A, and 60% of his time on Project B.  But, as a manager I should know that anyway.

Performance review would be wrapped around expectations and goals.  Perhaps you could have a project that had each persons goals as stories and they could add tasks under them to show how they have progressed?  Then during reveiw, bring up the stories, view the tasks and see how they have done?

These are some ideas, however I must say they are a reach, Rally is for project data.  Performance reviews are different.

Good Luck, hope some of this helps at least!

    Hi Thomas,

Thanks for respoding to rhe question. your answer is helpful. I dont want to spend too much of the time to dig the information as we have not yet decided whether Rally should be used as performance measuring tool or not.

your response 'Performance reviews are different' completely make sense. lets see what other members think

Hi Gagan, typically we discourage against using Agile Central as an individual performance measurement tool, as that's not what it's for and that's not the way we do agile. If anything, measuring the performance of the delivery team is more useful and is better for the organization as a whole.

    An excerpt from https://help.rallydev.com/top-10-mistakes-teams#resistance:
" ...The organization must make it very clear that it supports the notion of team successes over individual performance. Eliminate personal metrics; you win and lose as a group. This will combat a potential cultural problem — that the transparency Agile provides will result in judgement by peers. Again, this goes back to providing an environment of trust."
