What is the best approach to maintain a list of impediments backlog in the rally?

Hafizul - what do you mean by "impediments"? Do you mean blockers (something preventing work items from being worked)?

Hi Hafizul, could you please elaborate?

Yes. Ideally we can call it as a Big blocker which spans across sprint/iterarions without any progress

I see. So, I would actually just use a Custom List app, and add the story Formatted ID, Name, Blocked, and Blocked Reason as columns. Then I would filter on Blocked = "Yes" to show only blocked work.

I also wish there was an impediment list too - like something that blocks lots of work.   Right now, what I'm doing just to track them, is creating one user story ("Impediments") and listing the impediments as tasks under it and then moving that user story over each sprint (obviously the story has 0 points).

Hi John - I tried the way you suggested but I could not see the blockers across all PARENT projects. I can see only for a specific project. Is there some thing additional that I should do?

Hafizul, you just need to make sure to set your project scoping appropriately. At the project picker at top-left, make sure to check the "Show items from parent projects" checkbox.

This is how my project is set ·         Parent Project 1 ·         Parent Project 2 o   Child Project 1 o   Child Project 2 ·         Parent Project 3 Even when I select the below setting, I am not able to see the more than 1  parent project blockers [Healthicity] Hafizul Naseer (Hafiz) E hafizul.naseer@healthicity.com M + 91 9940009117 healthicity.com

Re-posting my project setup in a better format.
    • Parent Project 1
    • Parent Project 2
      • Child Project 1
      • Child Project 2

    • Parent Project 3

Hafizul, based on that hierarchy, that appears to be correct. So if you are scoped to Child Project 1, you'd only be able to see items from Child Project 1 and Parent Project 2.  You can't scope to anything outside of the current hierarchy, meaning parent-child. No siblings! :)

    I hope that helps.

Thanks John. Myquestion is What should I do to list the blockers of all parent projects?

Hi there - you would need one project on the very top of your hierarchy which is a parent to all other projects, then scope to that project with "Show items from child projects" checked.

I don't think the question has been answered, and I have it too. I already know how to get a list of blocked work. Those are the blockEEs. I want to record the blockERs, to track their resolution and also to see patterns of obstacles.

For example, if four stories are blocked because a key person in IT is on a three-week vacation, I would like that fact recorded in a list I could refer to in the future.  And if it happened every sprint with some other key resource, I would like to be able to record that fact to present to the teams so they could visualize the systemic impediment and try to resolve it.

Listing the blocked stories, or even the blocking history, is simply not good enough.

Of course I could create a new Project for impediment resolution and then user stories, but identifying them as impediments would be more useful and less confusing.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I get it now, now that I'm older and much smarter. Actually, Bob, thanks for explaining what is meant here as I definitely didn't get what this ask was about.

    So something like this, right?

There's a set of unsupported, custom apps out there created by our Technical Services team that probably fit this need. Take a look:

GitHub - RallyTechServices/blocker-apps: A series of charts and a grid to display blocker history and metrics
