Reverting to last revision??

  • 1.  Reverting to last revision??

Is there a way to retrieve a previously saved story version? I pressed backspace, and it deleted the entire body of my story, and then auto-saved! It's a lot of work to get it back. How can I revert to a previous revision?

Hi Veronica!  Have you switched to the new Edit Details page that is currently in beta?  If so, there is a nice "Revisions" tab within the Edit Details page that lets you see all revisions.

If on the old editor, when you click into the user story, you will see Revisions as a link on the bottom left.

Either way, you just have to find that previous description, and copy & paste!

John, thanks for the reply. I'm using the new version. When I went to the revisions, the column is not copy pastable or interactive in any way, and all it says is that the text was too long to display! So not only can I not copy it -- I cannot see my previous content.

Veronica, I'm very sorry to hear that.  If the amount of text was larger than what shows in the Revision History, then there is not a way to recover that detail.  Something to keep in mind on the new Edit Detail Page is that it will save if you exit the field ... for instance if you hit "Tab" to switch to another field.  Please do not hesitate to provide feedback directly to the Product Owner of this feature by using the "Feedback" button on the new editor:

There is a user story on our backlog to create an "Undo" for the editor, waiting to be planned into an iteration.

This just bit me too.  I had a large description that took a while to create.  It is too large to display in the revision page.  Someone else accidentally deleted much of it and I cannot recover it.

Incredibly frustrating.  It should be so simple to restore part of the revision history.  I have to take a screen shot of my own revision history and manually re-enter all the material, all for one errant keystroke that auto-saved the change.

Thank you very much for your feedback -- your frustration is definitely understood here.  One workaround (for now) that may work if you're still in the editor when all the material is removed is ctrl+z to undo (cmd +z on Mac).

Would you be interested in posting your feedback to the Product Feedback group?  Here's the link:

Please prioritize this if you can.

Had a situation where we accidentally deleted many of the tasks from a story and there isn't an easy way to recover the tasks, details, and their states.

One tip: if you have notifications turned on, all revisions should go to your email. I've just uncovered some stories this way. I had rules set so I didn't think to go to look in my email necessarily as the first step -- but something of a workaround. At least you can copy and paste from there :)

@John, please feel free to share this feedback with the product team. I'm sure they can access these discussion threads? Let's not ask for the community to do more work. You guys have ways to collect user feedback, I assume; this should be one place to look...

Hi all, here is the feature for the "Undo" functionality:

F6888 - Provide "Undo" to EDP (Edit Detail Page)

I'm going to create a case for anyone who posts here, and associate that case to the story under this feature.  That is the best way to collect feedback and "interested" parties at this point since we have a feature-in-progress!

So, post here if you'd like to be added to the list of "interested parties"!

Andrew Kim and Greg UNKNOWN, could you please email me?  I don't have a way to correlate this posting with your Rally information to create a case for you.  Thanks!

I just got bitten by this too.
I find it a bit strange that you go to all the effort of keeping a revision history but don't support a rollback to a previous revision...

Any update here?  I just deleted 50 hours worth of tasks - can see them in the revisions - can I bring them back please!

Hey Colin, we've actually since released the Undo button on the Edit Detail Page:
    0EM140000004kgY

Are you looking for something that just undoes anything in Revision History?

Also, if you deleted Tasks from a Story or Defect, they should still be in the Recycle Bin for you to restore.  Just click into the Recycle Bin, find and restore them!  Hope that helps.

I have a similar problem to Colin, I have spent the last hour trying to restore tasks from the recycle bin that I lost when I accidentally made a child story instead of adding a successor, and when I went to look at the story it was as if I'd done nothing. When I try to go to the "restored" task using the green go to restored item link, I get a 404 error. After I restore, it does seem to move the task to Active in search results momentarily, but when I click on on the link to view the task it tells me that another user has deleted it and when I search again it's back in the recycle bin. HELP

Hi Carly, I've brought this thread to the attention of our Customer Voice team.  It sounds like this is something several of our customers are looking for, so it's good for them to have on their radar.

the new features are horrible, as if soemone else has the same story open, and doens't refresh the page first, they overwrite your changes with no way to ge thtem back!  not only this, the revison history doesn't even show everything that was changed, so there is no way to get anyhting back.  This is horrible.  At first the new edit layout was not bad, but this makes it the worst.

I just had a similar issue.  Somehow a large portion of text from the description was removed.  I see only a tiny bit of it in the revision history.  Undo only seems to work for changes that have not yet auto-saved.

An update:  The above post actually relates to a story that has since been released, which introduced the "Undo" functionality on the Editable Detail Page.  That functionality, while nice to have, isn't exactly the same as reverting revision history.

I encourage you to post this topic (or vote for an existing one) on Rally Ideas at http://ideas.rallydev.com/ (http://ideas.rallydev.com) to garner additional discussion and votes from other Rally users. Your Rally Ideas account activates by logging in using your Rally username and password.

Ok.  So a collugue copied a story that we were all working on in grooming.  We had been working on the story for the last week and had it finally dialed in.  When the copy happened, both the copied story and the original ended up displaying the same text as the newly copied story (which was only 1 line).

Conclusion - We lost the details from about a weeks worth of maturation and I am incredibly frustrated.  Makes me want to go back to using google docs and ditch Rally.  Completely maddening.

I'm assuming that you write a bit of software to make Rally work. I would guess that you use some sort of source change control system. Would you want to  do that software development in an environment which lists the versions, does not support reverting to a prior verison if a large change is made, and automatically saves changes? I doubt it!

Try this experiment: Every few weeks delete a file from your product source. Print out a copy of the change log so you can read the history but not the actual file content.  Really delete the source file content so that you need to rewrite that product source from scratch. I'm guessing after the first several product source rewrites this feature will move up the priority list.

Has there been any resolution to the problem of the revision history tracking only part of the history for fields with a lot of text? We had something deleted recently from one of our stories, and I'm hoping to recover it even though only a portion of the old details are visible in the revision history.

Any update on this? We are encountering the same issue. I see an Idea on the Rally Ideas page (D783) to restore a previous version of a User Story, but it is listed as "Not Planned" - is there a different Idea that is planned?

Similar issue with Rally. When you accidentally delete a Feature that has several user stories attached to it. Restoring just brings the Feature back not the attached user story. It helps if they retain the connection to child objects when restoring.

Please keep us informed this feature is been worked on by your product team .

Has there been any update to this? It seems completely nuts that an editor with automatic revision creation and saving wouldn't have the ability to revert to a previous revision. It also generally unacceptable to be unable to see what was in a previous revision. Why bother tracking revisions at all if one can't see what exactly was changed?
