UIM Training - self-paced or instructor-led

  • 1.  UIM Training - self-paced or instructor-led

    Posted 08-21-2015 12:47 PM

    Hello,

New to UIM administration, I'll building the whole infrastructure from scratch and leading the rollout, including training for our users. I've supported NSM, URM, Spectrum, eHealth, VAIM, Performance Center. (And AutoSys.)

I am going to take the admin course, but would like recommendations based on personal experience on whether the self-paced is adequate, or if the instructor-led class has significant advantages of which I should avail myself.

    Thank you,

    Joe Poutre

Personally speaking, I had to build out the whole infrastructure from scratch with only the manuals as the course was not available in time. Found that these forums and support helped a lot. I did do the admin course eventually and it did fill in a number of gaps and assumptions.

    Joe,

Welcome.  I'm actually the Program Manager for UIM Education, and hopefully I can help out.  To get you going, we actually have posted some free YouTube videos on the CA Education You Tube channel..  You can find them at:

    CA UIM Overview - YouTube

Installing CA UIM 8.2 - YouTube

These are a great place to get started.

In terms of the Instructor Led Education, We have two offerings... Instructor Led and OnDemand.   The OnDemands are the exact same course as the instructor led, using simulated lab environments.   This allows you to access the training at a lower cost, at your own pace.   Overall, the product is fairly easy to learn, and for most the OnDemand will work well for you.

You can find the learning paths for UIM at:  http://www.ca.com/us/~/media/Files/LearningPaths/clp-ca-unified-infrastructure-management.pdf

I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have.

    Hello Vern,

I have been working in UIM from an old version however, I am looking for a training (if available) on working with LUA in UIM. Is there one available on this ? Would be glad to learn that as I am trying to learn from scratch with many assumptions which is not a real good sign for a good learning curve.

    Kag,

We have some limited training on LUA in the System Administration Foundations course.   That's available as an OnDemand/Self-Paced.

Scripting training has been a challenge, because there are so many use-cases.   So we never can make everyone happy.   That being said, we are looking at where we should go with scripting training.   We will probably never offer basic LUA language training, you'll need to go to the LUA sites for that, but in terms of UIM specific things, we are figuring out how to keep that type of information up.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I took the instructor-led course, and found it very helpful to have the feedback of a live person, so for someone starting on UIM from scratch my finding is that the instructor-led course is the way to go. UIM is very different to Spectrum/eHealth/VAIM/SysEdge, and also NSM, and its three-headed GUI makes it, shall we say, "interesting" to remember where to go for a given task.
