  • 1.  How does Spectrum monitor a device with ping?

We are setting up our servers to be monitored for ping with Spectrum.  But only ping and not SNMP as we are using MS SCOM & SCCM for the deep dive information.

How does Spectrum interigate an IP address to ensure it is working?  We are currently using What's Up Pro and ping every 60 seconds, on five missed pings we notify.  How is the equivalent configured for Spectrum?  My understanding is that we do not want Spectrum to ping every 60 seconds, so how do we configure Spectrum to get the server to notify after ping is lost on the server for five minutes?

    Thank you in advance,

Dave- have you configured any agent on these servers or through SNMP you are monitoring .

    Hi Issac08,

    Thank you for responding.

No agents for Spectrum, No SNMP, ping only.  Agents yes for MS SCCM and SCOM.

I'm not sure if that answers your question.

    Thank you,

You can monitor servers via ICMP (ping only) by modeling them as model type "Pingable".  You can set your polling interval (default is 300 seconds but you can make it 60 seconds or whatever you like) as well as DCM retry intervals (default is 3000 ms with 3 retries).  What you will want to make sure you do is set the "Value_When_Red" attribute to a non zero value (7 is the default for SNMP models and what I would recommend here).  The default is 0 on a Pingable which will cause the icon to turn blue (initial) and not alarm.  The idea behind that default is that folks would discover their network and include printers, desktops, etc. that they don't want to alarm on.  If monitoring was "important", you'd have SNMP on it.  Anyway, when you change the value to 7, you'll get red when it's down and green when it's up.

As far as notifying when it the server doesn't respond to ping in a 5 minute window, you could have Spectrum poll the device every 60 seconds and then configure a SANM policy to only notify after the alarm is 5 minutes old.

If Spectrum receives even 1 response in the allotted time, it will count as having made contact.

    Murray,

We can poll the pingable model for every 5 minutes by configuring the polling interval to 300 on the pingable model and alarm incase it goes down. But i believe you need an alarm only when the device is down for continous 5 minutes right?

I suggest to configure the SPM ICMP tests available in Spectrum to achieve your requirement. Have a look at the Spectrum performance guide for options available in icmp tests.

    Hi Dave

You should consider integrating SCOM with Spectrum through the Southbound gateway. You can then subscribe Spectrum to 'interesting' SCOM alerts which will then be asserted against the correct model in spectrum. We implemented this for a customer and it worked very well.
