Quick question, and I think I might be able to predict the answer, but here goes - is anybody aware of a way of automating the hiding of the left hand menu bar? I would like it to be hidden by default (ideally only for members of a certain group).

I don't think there is automatic hiding.
There is a toolbar button for hiding the navigation bar, but that is not automatic nor admin controlled.

If you are referring to the navigation bar on the left, what is displayed there depends on the user rights and the Overview - General is displayed always.

That does not remove the toolbar button, so a user can toggle the navigation bar back.
