  • 1.  Control definition update when using GUP

    Posted Nov 29, 2018 06:24 AM

We are using GUPs in our environment and we need to control the definition distribution time. Say we want the definitions to go to one group at 8 am and not after that. to another group at 8 pm and not at any other time. Can someone suggest something. Thanks.

There is no option to set a schedule for GUPs to distribute content to clients at a specific time. Clients check-in based on heartbeat and get content, if needed.

May want to look into using third party tools...

Unfortunately there is no such setting in SEPM , clients will communicate with SEPM based on heart beat setting.

based on that they will get notified by SEPM to get update from GUP, apart from this there is no other setting....:(

So its not possible, let me ask you this.

Can we configure when the SEPM should get the definition from a LUA / LUDP? And once the SEPM is updated the GUPs will automatically get it from the SEPM right?

    That's correct.

Once the SEPM updates at 08:00, all clients will then update in accordance with their heartbeat settings and download randomisation windows (via the SEPM or via a GUP as appropriate).  Updated clients will not update again until the SEPM gets another set of new defs (at 20:00), but you still cannot stop a subset of clients from updating between certain hours (not wihout messing around with LiveUpdate Content policies anyway, which would entail a lot of daily administrative effort).

To be fair, the idea of GUPs is to reduce the amount of data sent over WAN links so that you don't have to manage timings.  If you're still experienceing bandwidth utilisation issues, then you may wish to look into using LiveUpdate (to tell the clients to update from either Symantec or a LUA), on which you can set a specific schedule per group.
