when i try to plug a usb 3 ssd into the guest OS, it simply hangs till i unplug. when i change the guest to only use usb 2, i cant use keyboard and mouse (even though it's a laptop).

using a crappy usb adapter which downturns it to usb 2 does work, however it's super slow.

Fusion does support USB3 drives. Can you give us more details on your host and VM so we can get a better idea on what’s going on:

  • Mac model you’re running
  • macOS version
  • Fusion version
  • Operating system you’re running in the VM.
  • What model USB3 drive and how is it formatted?

Can you elaborate on “hangs until I unplug”? What is hanging? The whole Mac? The VM? When you unplug, does the VM continue to run?

Could you also post the vmware*log files found in the virtual machine’s bundle folder?

i'm using macbook air m3

macos 15.5

Player Version 13.6.2 (24409261)

Windows 11 24H2 (ARM)

USB 3.1 formatted exFAT on a windows machine

The virtual machine will just freeze up if i open or do anything which would require reading off of a (internal or external) drive. when i unplug the ssd, the vm will speed up and do everything properly again.

i'm not sure where to get the vmware log files, i will post them if i find it.

See the Fusion documentation https://techdocs.broadcom.com/us/en/vmware-cis/desktop-hypervisors/fusion-pro/13-0/using-vmware-fusion/configuring-vmware-fusion/work-with-virtual-machine-packages.html if you need help on finding the vmware*.log files.
