Hi,

I installed VMware Workstation Player 17.6.0 on Ubuntu 24.04 on a Thinkpad T14 Gen 5 laptop.
It made my system very unstable. The biggest problem was that I could not suspend or reboot the system. (neither from command line nor from GUI)
Below are some messages that may be relevant to this issue, extracted by "journalctl -r" command.
9月 07 15:42:07 fujilaptop5 systemd[1]: systemd-suspend.service: Consumed 4.431s CPU time.

I have removed 17.6.0 and installed VMware Workstation Player 17.5.2 following the instructions,
https://nwgat.ninja/quick-easy-vmware-workstation-pro-on-ubuntu-24-04/
It worked perfectly.

I would appreciate if someone could tell me how to solve this problem.
Best Regards,

The problem and temporary solution is posted in this thread:

https://community.broadcom.com/vmware-cloud-foundation/question/problem-with-176-update-on-ubuntu-2204

Summary VM 17.6.0 breaks Ubuntu systems with 6.8.0 kernel.

Awaiting official VM patch.

I have the same problem. Ubuntu 22.04 with Workstation 17.5 worked perfectly and I had to upgrade!

Ubuntu 24.04 with 6.8.0-40 kernel and VMWare Workstaion 17.6.0 have following problems:

  • after some time whole kernel becomes unstable
  • I notice this when network interface inside of the VM stops working (Internet not available and doesn't ping)
  • If I then open command prompt and enter any command, it just waits. Doesn't even run the command
  • Then even reboot doesn't start or blocks in certain step
  • Then I need to force reboot

Also have problems with my Jabra USB headset not working...which is probably Ubuntu 24.04 issue. Also vents working all the time...

Since I had Kernel 6.5.0-45 available, when I boot with this kernel, VMWare Workstation works with the network and doesn't kill the kernel.

But I still have USB Headetset (Jabra ) issues with the microphone in Ubuntu 24.04 host and in the VM itself, when moving USB into the VM...

I will try to reinstall 17.5.2

Same issue here (17.6.0 on Ubuntu 24.04)...
I also noticed that my network on the host crashed after a few minutes running any type of VM as guest (Ubuntu, Win 11) and afterwards it's not possible to open any browser on the host (FF, Chrome-9). FF crashed a few times so badly, that my profile was damaged an all cookies were gone. Installed Virtualbox instead.
