Hi,

I am having issues installing VMware Center Converter Standalone on Windows 11.

I am getting the Error 29163. Could not copy file

C:\Users\fabio\AppData \Local\Temp\converter-agent.xml.

From Googling I found out that I am not the only one with this issue.

What I already tried:

  • Deleting the mentioned file
  • Running the installer as root
  • Rebooting
  • Disabling antivirus
  • Checking that I have enough space
  • Running an older version

Some version numbers:

  • Windows 11 24H2
  • VMware-converter-en-6.6.0-23265344

Thank you very much for your help.

There are several additional checks:

  1. Check Permissions and File Locks
  2. Use a Clean Boot
  3. Try Using the Latest VMware Converter Version

Hope these could help you.

Hi

I did try a clean boot, but sadly it didn't help.

Version 6.6.0 is the latest version of VMWare Converter, or is there a newer version?

The permissions also look fine as I couldn't find a reason why the installer couldn't copy the file.

What else can I try?

I even tried a fresh Windows 11 installation and it didn't work

Hi Fabio,

Thanks for your feedback. I am surprised it is trying to access that file under C:\Users\fabio. This is a system-wide configuration file and should be located under "C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone". The only thing that comes to my mind is related to admin/non-admin users. Can you try to run the installer with right click on it and selecting the "Run as administrator" from the context menu? Is your user a member of the administrators group? I tried running the installer both with admin (member of Administrators) and non-admin users, in the first case the installation was successful, in the second - the installer prompted an error message that the current user needs to have admin privileges and exited. I have not used Win 11 24H2 though as I don't readily have one available and it would take more time to set up such machine.
