License set to expire, what happens to existing datastore?

Since having to move to the subscription based licensing, we are going with the vSphere Essentials Plus and having to leave VSAN behind for cost reasons.

Unfortunately, our new data storage appliance isn't up and running yet (power issues), so I can't move our VMs from the VSAN datastore to any new datastore.

We haven't changed our vSphere/VSAN license from the original license which expires this month. Now I'm getting alerts that hosts will be disconnected from vCenter when that happens. (Which I didn't think would happen since we've bought perpetual licenses in the past)

So my questions are:

  • What happens to VSAN when I install the new subscription license for vSphere Essentials Plus? Does it stay on?

  • What happens to our VSAN datastore when the VSAN license expires? There's going to be a gap of about a week or two between expiry and our new storage appliance coming online and being ready for migration.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

Support technicians told me that the VSAN datastore would still be available. But that I couldn't add or remove disks to the group. Then said to move it asap because I would lose access to VSAN and it would be in read only mode. Lots of different responses :( Good job Broadcom.

In the end I signed up for the VCF Sphere trial to hold us over until we get our storage network online and I can migrate VMs off of vSAN.
