Hi everybody,

with vSphere 9 ESXi became ESX (without the "i" suffix) again: anyone out there who knows the reason why?

Thanks

The name change from ESXi to ESX with vSphere 9 is a marketing decision, not a technical one. VMware has not officially stated the reason, but it is likely to align with a broader rebranding effort and simplify the naming convention for their core hypervisor. The underlying technology and functionality of the product remain essentially the same.

I really don't like this change because there is a guy at our company who has always mistakenly called it "ESX" and I would correct him and now I can't die on this hill and he wins.

Don't worry, it will turn in your favor someday :)

The name "ESX" has been associated with VMware's virtualization platform, evolving from VMware ESX Server to VMware ESXi. Initially, it was known as VMware ESX Server, with the "ESX" standing for "Elastic Sky X". Over time, the product shifted to ESXi, which dropped the "X" and represented a more streamlined, service console-less design.
