Attempted to upgrade to 17.6.3 on an HP Envy 17 2023 Laptop, and this still fails with a kernel BUG error, but is OK on other Linux systems:

The last version that compiles/loads/runs OK on this system is 17.5.2, and fortunately this older version (with patches..) is still OK with the latest 6.14-rc kernels..
As a point of reference, 17.6.3 installs OK on other Linux systems with the same Kernel - 6.13.4 and Distro (Fedora 41)..

rgadsdon What is the OS of the HOST where you are seeing this issue?

Please execute these commands "cat /etc/os-release", "uname -a" and share the respective output.

Also share the vmware-installer log & System log from location "/var/log" AND latest failure "vmware-vmispy***" & "vmware-***" logs from this location "/tmp/vmware-root"

    Additional info:

I looked at the ..cannot build modules... post, and saw that it recommended disabling Indirect branch tracking (ibt=off on the kernel command line)

I tried this, and the installer now works correctly:

    root@rgenvy17:/home/rgadsdon/kernel# ./VMware-Workstation-17.6.3-24583834.x86_64.bundle
    Extracting VMware Installer...done.
    Installing VMware Workstation 17.6.3

    [######################################################################] 100%
    Installation was successful.
    root@rgenvy17:/home/rgadsdon/kernel# vmware --version
    VMware Workstation 17.6.3 build-24583834

But the guest (Win10) fails to start, with 'VMware Workstation irrecoverable error: (mks)
    Unexpected signal 11... etc...

    Log file uploaded..

Hi, I observe same error on my ROG Strix G834JY with kernel 6.13.5-xanmod (Ubuntu 24.10) so it probably won't be specific to one piece of HW. Logs posted here: https://community.broadcom.com/vmware-cloud-foundation/discussion/1762-cannot-build-modules-on-kernel-613  (post check pending).

Has this been fixed in 17.6.4?   No mention on the release notes, and this version does not even work OOB with the latest (6.15) kernel!

Yes I was very surprised that  patches are still required for

Linux Workstation 17.6.4 build-24832109 for use with kernel 6.15.6-200.fc42.x86_64

The same patches (17.6.3) appear to work.

The patches have been available for some time!

This is also probably relevant but I don't understand it!

I can confirm that both WS 17.6.3 and 17.6.4 need patches for kernel 6.15 (the module sources are the same between the 2 releases).

The support for the Workstation kernel modules doesn't keep up with the latest kernel releases - it's been that way for years. It's especially painful for distributions like Fedora that ship the latest kernel versions. This is complicated by the  Linux kernel developers frequently changing things that break the compiling of the modules.

I think, though, that the module compilation problem on kernel 6.15 is a different issue than that being discussed in this thread. I'm wondering if a custom kernel configuration may be involved here. The OP provides a kernel version, but not the distro being used. Also@Antonin Skala indicates that  a "xanmod" custom kernel is in use - not a standard Ubuntu kernel

Hi, I have to use mentioned patch set also on clean openSUSE TW machine with kernel 6.15.6 so I do not think, that custom kernel nor configuration is an issue.

Again, we're talking two different problems here. The issue you're describing is due to kernel changes in 6.15 that keep the kernel modules in WS 17.6.3 and .4 from compiling (and where unofficial patches are available so that they will compile). And yes, Broadcom hasn't updated Workstation yet to add official support for these kernels. For the time being we're going to have to rely on the unofficial patches to keep things working on these new kernels.

The discussion in this thread started with an issue with loading compiled 17.6.3 modules on a 6.13.4 kernel. The funny thing about that is that the poster found that modules for 17.6.3 work fine on other machines running a 6.13.4 kernel. Which tells me that there's something different about the system with the errors compared to other systems with the same Workstation and kernel versions where things are working fine. That's where my comment/question about whether a custom kernel was in use was directed.
