  • 1.  Windows XP Pro: blank screen after installing VMWare Tools

    Posted Feb 22, 2025 04:53 AM

I have installed Windows XP Pro (32-bit) on VMWare Workstation v17 Linux, with the Enable 3D Acceleration in my VM settings and hardware acceleration in the Global settings. When the OS is installed, the display works fine until I installed VMWare Tools. Now I get a black screen. What I did was shut down the VM and edited the VMX file to include "mks.forceDiscreteGPU = "TRUE", and then restarted the VM. I still have a black screen after I do this.

I get the same result when I try to enable the SPICE driver in QEMU v8.2.8.

I also turned on IOMMU in my BIOS setting.

    ----

Distro: Fedora Linux 40 (Kernel 6.12.11)

Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650

    Graphics driver: 565.77

Only a guess. Please see whether changing the "Accelerate 3D graphics" in the VM's Display settings helps.

Disabling 3D Acceleration makes the display work for me, but things look washed out. Certain programs that rely on Direct3D also don't function correctly, such as VICE and WinUAE.
