Win 11 client Excessive memory usage: Service host network service

Running VM workstation pro version 16.1.2 on Win 11 host 23H2. I have 3 clients windows vista, windows 10 and windows 11 (created from the physical Win 11 host machine). The Win 11 client seemed to run as expected but I noticed increasing memory usage when active. There are 3 instances of service host: network service running and one of them continually consumes memory, it got up to almost a gig before shutting the client down. Below is an ipconfig  /all listing for each client, notice the win 11 client has 7 network adapters while the other two only 3. Could that be my problem? Can I inactivate some of them and if which ones are needed for it to have internet and machine to machine network capability? The memory usage does not increase constantly or consistently it only seems to increase when the network service process gets a few percentage of CPU time, usually it has zero CPU usage. I am using NAT for networking. Do I need 5 ethernet adapters in the win11 guest?

Not sure about Memory Usage, but you do have a potential problem with Networks. You can use the Virtual Network Editor to see what VMware networks are. Typically they are 1 for Host-only and 8 for NAT.

    Delete the others.

Or REDO the creation from the Physical Computer and do not take those things, like drivers and adapters, that shouldn't be taken from the physical computer but let VMware to work how it works.

    I hope this will work.

If you don't have Virtual Network Editor, you haven't installed Pro. That should be installed, for this purpose, even if you don't use it, but use the Player which gets installed in the same install. That is the same with older versions that were not "free", because that Editor continued to work after an Evaluation Period.

Thank you for your quick response. So based on the network listed below I should delete or disable all the network adapters except ethernet0, vmnet1 and vmnet2?

                                    ethernet3         192.168.1.110
                                   ethernet1         192.168.1.108
                                   ethernet2         192.168.1.109
                                   ethernet4         192.168.1.102
                                  vmnet1            192.168.215.1
                                  vmnet8            192.168.220.1

    Sorry, my answer was inaccurate.

The physical computer has vmnet1 and vmnet8 for VMware and also other networks depending on the case (Ethernet, Wifi, whatnot).

When using NAT, inside the VM, you have only ethernet0 for connecting to networking. Now you have copied all the networks from the physical computer and you don't need any of them, or rather cannot even use them. In my particular case, I have also a Bluetooth Network inside VM, although I never use it - it was just installed by default.

I really meant:  Thank you for your quick response. So based on the network listed below I should delete or disable all the network adapters except ethernet0, vmnet1 and vmnet8?

I took your advice and disabled all the excess network adapters but that did not cure the problem. You put me on the right track though, it was indirectly a network problem. There is a vmware section in reddit and someone else had the same problem. He posted a message to microsoft and was advised to turn off "receive updates for other microsoft products" in settings, windows updates, advanced options. This was turned on in my win11 client, turning it off stopped the excessive network service usage. I appreciate the help you gave me I now have a much better understanding of vmware client networking.

    Thanks!

As for Windows, there is a much more sneaky problem with networking which will stop all network functionality - at least if you are using mobile data connection, not if you have a decent fibre optic connection. The thing is that Microsoft wants to active OneDrive at every turn, means that if you have something in its default directory, like on the Desktop, it will try to Upload everything to OneDrive. That paralyzes mobile data connection, if its not of the top quality. You know, Upload at maximum possible speed does that, generally speaking. So, keep on eye that OneDrive is not functional, if you don't know about it and desire it.
