  • 1.  When to add additional collectors

    Posted Oct 21, 2024 01:45 PM

I recently installed Aria Operationa Manager for the first time. I built it with a single appliance (collector)  My environment is all on prem with 4 VCenters and about 300 hosts. At what time do I need to consider adding a second collector?

    Thanks

What sizing configuration did you deploy the single appliance?  It depends on the total number of objects you are collecting.
Have a look at the sizing guidelines. You can use that as reference.

    Version 8.18.x

Go to Administration -> Control Panel -> Collection status.

You will see how many objects and metrics you are collecting.

    Example:

Then, compare with KB Pasted by Rick:

@Pawel Koc This is really awesome link and should cover most of the sizing related questions, thanks

    Hi @Pawel Koc

I came across the helpful information in your documentation indicating that it's possible to use a single node as a collector for multiple vCenters.

In our environment, we have multiple vCenters distributed across different networks and geographically separated data centers.

Could you please provide guidance or steps on how we can configure a single node to act as a collector for these vCenters? Additionally, are there any considerations or constraints-especially regarding network configurations, latency, or node capacity-that we should keep in mind during deployment?

    Thank you for your support.

    Hi Garima,

I can give some advice based on customer Aria Operations solutions I've worked on.

Generally we recommend a collector group (pair of Cloud Proxy) per site to provide HA for larger customer enviroments.

As you are describing multi-site and geographic locations, this model will work well. Then you should considering building some local site HA into your Aria Operations cluster to protect the analytics cluster data.

    Hi @Garima Arya,
You need to create a new Colletor Group.

    https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Aria-Operations/8.18/Configuring-Operations/GUID-3760632F-E28B-4C85-B326-8CC180E5405A.html

In the collector group, you can define members. Then, on the Adapters, you point them to the Collector Group.
