What is the model(s) of SSD you have in these servers?

You can only run vSAN ESA if you have all NVMe drives in your servers. You seem to be running a Synergy system with SAS SSDs, this is not a supported topology for ESA.

Besides the NVMe requirements, there's also a network requirement - you need to be running at least a 25 gbps network for storage.

I believe you currently can only base ESA Configs off of ESA ReadyNodes.

HPE only offers ESA ReadyNodes for Gen11 DL38x Servers.

There is probably no ESA support for any Synergy Servers at the moment.

The Compatibility Guide for OSA is here: VMware Compatibility Guide - vsanosa

HPE Synergy Gen11 QuickSpecs. The vSAN ESA VCG has over 28 vSAN ESA Ready Nodes listed (26 or so AF0/AF2 and two 1 2 AF-HighDensity using the new P39593-B21 8 x EDSFF NVMe E3.S Direct Connect Raw 107 TB, 8x 15.36TB E.S) Dan Robinson of HPE referred to last December '23.  At the time Dan wrote his post a good portion were on the vSAN ESA HCL all HPE Synergy 480 Gen11 using the front cage P39592-B21 4 x SFF NVMe U.3 (Direct Connect) option.  Other cages support NVMe with Tri-Mode  SR416ie-m controller (JBOD RAID 0) with mixed front cage options allowing 2 or 4 2.5" SFF U.3 SAS/SATA/NVMe.

    Agree with Brisk.

D3940 is SAS only (You can run SATA but you wouldn't have Path Redundancy so a Firmware update to the SAS 12G Switch modules would cause All Paths Down error)

Synergy Gen10 Plus and Gen11 do offer front-of-blade NVMe drives.
There is already a Synergy 480 Gen11 4 x SFF U.3 (Direct Connect) option in vSAN ESA HCG.
8 x EDSFF option will be coming very soon.
But as per above, neither of these ESA solutions leverages the D3940 because it doesn't support NVMe and ESA REQUIRES NVMe.
