Up front, I am not an expert. This doc "Configuring Host-Only Networking" is about VPN when Workstation is configured to use Host-Only network.

    https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Pro/17/com.vmware.ws.using.doc/GUID-E2D23B25-AB5E-49FB-8825-CC528693C5B1.html

I am not sure how to understand this:
    - when the host uses VPN, then, I assume, Workstation with default settings will use the VPN of the host
    - when the host does -not- use VPN, when I select 'Host-Only' will then Workstation create a VPN ? (i.e. Workstation is using VPN then)

VPN usually isn't free of charge.

    Thanks.

    Thewul,

I'm not sure what you want to do. If you want to have Host-only networking, you just select it. The story is telling that you are isolated from the outside world, but not with other VMs in the same physical computer using Host-only networking. VPN is the technology behind it, that's all.

IF you want to use VPN in the VM to get into the outside world, just use NAT-networking - and as you kind of suggested, buy a VPN service software for better quality. It works in the NAT VM just like that. OR you can configure your Host differently, as the guide suggests, but that requires some doing. OR do something else, but the NAT VM is the simplest way, if that is only what you require.

    I hope this explains.

    Hello to you,

Sorry for the delay. Many thanks for the explanation. All clear. I simply wasn't familiar with the term 'host only', which led to some confusion on my part.

    Anyway, thanks again.
