VMware Workstation version 17.5.2 stuck in "Update pending..."

Got a pop-up to update to 17.5.2. Started update, now its stuck on "Finished updating WMware Tools for Windows 95, 98, Me and NT. (WHich is soooo useful of course) ... Update pending...

Been like that for about 15 minutes.

NOTE: this is the first update after the Broadcom purchase. Not a good start IMHO

It appears that the update window is "stuck" because the Updater has opened a "VMware Workstation Pro Setup" window BEHIND everything else. So the "Update pending" window is waiting for me to find the "Setup" window and start the installation.  Obviously, the testers at VMware/Broadcom only test the update process with NO other windows open at all. (Although, how they start the app normally, filling the screen (not full screen), proceed with the Update popup AND be able to see the "Setup" window, I have no idea.)

@markhutch Please confirm if this issue is happening continuously.

You can check your Internet settings and give it a retry.

In case if it's happening regularly then try below-

1) Add Entry in settings.ini (ref this for location if not found https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1754)
   ui.log.filelevel = "trivia"

2) Reproduce the issue and share latest  vmware ui log file from this location - "C:\Users\dtomar\AppData\Local\Temp\vmware-<username>"

The “fix” to the issue was described in thread. Basically, the update/installer wasn’t actually hanging, just that a pop-up was waiting for input but was not opened in front of the main installer window. So it wasn’t visible until I used control-tab to cycle through open windows.

This issue can be closed.

Nothing new here - the 'updaters' launched from a running Workstation process have ALWAYS been a bit wonky.  For 20 years I have always manually downloaded the Workstation installer from the VMware site and run it once downloaded and verified that the checksums matched.
