  • 1.  VMware Workstation Pro 17.6.1 - Slow to suspend or shutdown any guest

    Posted Nov 22, 2024 02:05 PM

As the subject mentions, it is slow to suspend or shutdown any guest on VMware Workstation Pro 17.6.1. This started after the update from 17.5.2.

When I say slow, it somewhat freezes the VM itself for about 2-3 minutes and finally shuts down (or gets suspended). When I resume or boot a vm, no issues.

All VM's are mostly Windows environment.

I remember having this issue in the past, when updating to 17.5.2 and had ran the "bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off" command but this time, it is not helping me... (maybe it was something different... but I have this in my head)

Has anyone had this issue ?

Hello, I have exactly the same problem, have you already found a solution?

    @Broadcom is there a fix?

No solution until now… I have searched and I can’t believe that I am the only one (now two) that has this issue…

No, we're at least three. :)

Especially when it comes to suspending a guest, it's a LOT slower than before. In my case, it appears the I/O write speed when suspending may have been limited (by Broadcom) to ~100 MB/s (i.e. hard drive speeds), whereas before there was no limit and my storage device is a LOT faster than that. What used to take a couple of seconds takes very much longer now.

I'm guessing it's either a bug or an artificial limitation, but it sure is very annoying.

(Also, I have similar issues with 3D hardware rendering, it's now become slow and glitchy so I've had to disable it in all my guests.)

If this doesn't improve soon, I guess I'll migrate to e.g. VirtualBox instead.

Hi Everyone, so you know, today I resolved the issue by updating to 17.6.2 (previously installed was 17.6.1). Lets hope this can help someone else looking for similar issue.

    Hello All,

Unfortunate with even VM Workstation 17.6.3 specific suspending a guest VM with Windows 11  takes considerable longer then before. Oddly on the same host, Lenovo P16 Gen 2/160 GB DRAM/5 TB SSD, the Linux Ubuntu 24.04 VM guest go relatively rapid into suspend mode.

    Brgds, Bas.

It's still the exact same problem for me, with both 17.6.2 and 17.6.3: resuming is fast but suspending is really slow.

(Also, 3D hardware rendering is as glitchy as before, and I must still have it disabled in all of my guests.)

I had it fixed and was working with 17.6.2, but last week, IT forced an upgrade to 17.6.3… and now again, I have the same issue… I am frustrated by this product. Time to find a better solution.
