New install of VMware Fusion 12 on Intel Macbook Air running Big Sur. VMware Tools installed but share dialog indicates that Shared folders will not be available in the virtual machine until VMware Tools is installed and running. How do I know if Tools is running and if not get it to run? Virtual Machine menu item shows Reinstall VMware Tools.

    Hi,

Sounds like the install did not go through properly.
I would -instead of the "Reinstall VMware Tools" option suggest the following:

    - uninstall VMware Tools in your guest OS, assuming this is Windows 10, rightclick the windows 10 orb in the left bottom corner, select "Settings" from the context menu, goto "Apps", look for VMware Tools in the list and select to uninstall it.

    Then reboot your guest OS.

Now try an install again (the Reinstall option should have changed into "Install")

Follow all the steps to install VMware Tools and reboot again after install.
If there's still problems, then start by telling more details such as if there was errors and what guest OS you are trying to install VMware Tools for.

Hello. I have same issue. Im running Fusion on macos (macbook pro M3) and my hosted VM is an Ubuntu.

I have same message in Shared folder settings. And "Install VMware Tools" is disabled in menu. I did installed vmware tools from Ubuntu repository, so now i see "Reinstall VMware Tools" is disabled in menu.

Please suggest why that menu point is disabled and how to manage VMware tools.

    Thanks

There are no VMware Tools packages for Linux on ARM that you install from the Fusion GUI.  Use open-vm-tools which are part of the Linux distros and installed using the distros package management tools.

The Fusion GUI will not reflect that you have open-vm-tools installed. You must verify that they are installed from within the VM.
