VMware Tools for macOS Monterey 12.7.6

  • 1.  VMware Tools for macOS Monterey 12.7.6

    Hi folks,

I use VMWare Fusion since like forever & never had real problems. I have an old Macbook Pro (Intel processor) with macOS Monterey 12.7.6. According to specification, "Fusion 13 supports Macs with either Intel or Apple silicon running macOS 12 and newer".

Since some months I can't start Fusion & my hosted system (some old Windows) without the MacBook immediately running HOT & the fan doing overwork! Hot air blows out between mey keys! -- And that before I even start any Windows application.

I have tried to get the current version of VMware Tools and the installation looks as if it had worked, normal behaviour, no error messages or even warnings. But I can repeat this indefinitely often, the menu point "VMware Tools installieren" never gets greyed out.

Any ideas what I could do?

    Thanks a bundle,

    Nachtkraebble

    A number of questions:

    What version of Fusion?

    What model of Mac?

What's the configuration of your Mac (in particular, how much memory)

What's the configuration of the VM? (How much memory and how many CPUs)?

What version of Windows are you running in the VM?

Do you have nested virtualization enabled for the VM in the VM's settings?

Thank you very much, Technogeezer. As far as I can answer:

    What version of Fusion? -- Player-Version 13.5.2 (23775688)

What model of Mac? -- MacBook Pro (Retina, 15', Mitte 2015)

What's the configuration of your Mac (in particular, how much memory) -- 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

What's the configuration of the VM? (How much memory and how many CPUs)? -- 4 cores; 2048 MB RAM; 94,9GB disc

Oh, I have just checked: There are just 9,7GB free on the C:, see attached picture. Might this be the problem? Can I use the "Bereinigen"-button (purge? clean? clear up? how is this named in English?) without fear here?

What version of Windows are you running in the VM? -- Windows 7 Ultimate.

Do you have nested virtualization enabled for the VM in the VM's settings? -- I didn't find that option in the settings. Where can I check that, please? -- At least I am sure that I do not use it.

On a regular basis, I delete everything from the temp-directory to give more space -- as far as possible. Of course I leave the files in use alone.

Hello technogeezer, thanks again for your detailed questions.

I have continued to read stuff up & just found that Fusion Player will be discontinued. Would it be a good idea just to migrate to VMWare Fusion Pro...? Might that help, or just be sensible? Like not nursing a broken doll...

    Thanx.

Fusion Player was discontinued starting with 13.5.2. Player and Pro are the same product, with Pro having more features - none of which should be causing the  problem you're seeing.

What temp directory are you deleting files from?

    Windows 7 32- or 64- bit?

Can you post the .vmx file and the .log files for this VM (both found in thevVM's bundle - go to the Finder, find the VM, right cllck on it, and select "Show Package Contents". A Finder window will open where you will find these files

Hi, thanks again. I expect to have a 64bit version as the directory is called "xWindows 7 x64.Xvmwarevm". Maybe the picture in the enclosure tells you more?
I found the *.vmx & the log-files directly in the said directory, see the other jpg in the enclosure.

I admit I have edited the files & changed my real name into my alias...

From looking at the logs, the last time this virtual machine was powered on was on macOS 10.12 (Sierra) with Fusion 8.5.

I'm always suspect of a Fusion implementation that looks like it's been upgraded from a macOS version earlier than 11 to 11 or later. Fusion made some major changes due to Apple's "guidance" to stop using kernel extensions. I am concerned that some "cruft" is leftover from those older versions.

Here's something that I would try to make sure there's nothing left over from those old versions of Fusion.

First, manually uninstall Fusion using the information in KB article https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/307074/how-to-uninstall-vmware-fusion-manually.html. Make sure you get the files in both the system-wide /Library folder, and the "hidden" Library folder that's in your user's home folder (~/Library).  Note that this procedure will not touch your VMs, but will clear out the Virtual Machine Library.

Then reboot and re-install Fusion 13.5.2. Note that Fusion 13.6 is not supported on macOS Monterey. You can open the VMs from the Fusion menu bar FIle > Open.. to locate the VM and re-populate the virtual machine library.

Thank you very much. I will try that in the next days. Your idea about some old crufts... that fits exactly into my fears and into that behaviour that VMWare Tools will not be properly renewed.

This is why I also plan to reinstall Mac OS from the internet as a whole (in contrast to updates).

I will post a note how I succeed.

Just as a point of reference - you do not install VMware Tools on the Mac that's running the Fusion application. You only install them in macOS or Windows virtual machines that you run under the Fusion application.

    Hi technogeezer,

then maybe I didn't express myself clearly -- I'm no native speaker plus this world of virtual machines is pretty strange to me. I do understand the concepts, but I am not an IT admin.

When I start 1. VMware Player, 2. the virtual machine, then the VMware has a menu entry offering "install VMware Tools" or similar. This usually is greyed out / deactivated. When I saw it is activated, I used it. After the installation, the menu entry usually was greyed out & deactivated again, but not these days. Since ...?... quite a while I can repeat this installation indefinitely often.

I had those problems with the overheating VMWare some times, but not on that scale. After installing a new version of the Tools, everything was fine again. Only this time that didn't work...

    Well, I have started proceedings:

    1. The new VMWare Player Pro 13.5.2 which will work with MacOS Monterey is downloaded.
    2. The "old" VMWare Player installation is deinstalled.
    3. I have backed up all my data.

To be on the very safe side, I am going to re-install MacOS Monterey complete from the internet. After that, I am going to install VMWare Player Pro 13.5.2.

As I am no admin, I am always sweating when doing such stuff, although I never had any problems with Mac.

    Wish me luck!

Understand that you're not a native English speaker - Apologies if the language difference is getting in the way of my understanding your problem.

Before re-installing Monterey, I'd first run through the steps in the tech note I posted in a previous reply. Simply dragging the VMware Fusion.app to the Trash does not completely remove Fusion. You need to remove all the "additional" files that Fusion places in other areas of your system. Take another backup after you've done this so that your backup doesn't contain these additional files.

Then re-install Fusion and see if things change.
