    Posted Mar 12, 2010 06:28 AM

    Hi @ all

I am planning to purchase a DELL R210 for training and/or testing, wich is on the official HCL from VM-Ware, what I want to know is if I can use this server in the basic config or if it should have a certain RAID controller (i.e Perc 6) like mentioned on the the unoffical hcl???

    greetings from germany

    Bone

I never ran ESX on top of this, but if it is on HCL is very unlikely it don't work as is, RAID or not.

    Hi,

the SAS 6/PERCi is not very expensive, so i would buy the contoller for the server.

    The SAS6/iR can work.

But I suggest the PERC if you plan to use local storage for VM datastore.

It perform better and with the battery pack can use the write back feature that improve very well the write operation.

i won´t use the local storage on the server, i thought of using a QNAP TS-410U with 2 TB for storage

In this case don't worry about the RAID controller.

At least you can install ESXi on a flash.
