  • 1.  VMs intermittently reboots after backup

    ESX 3.5 Update 5

    Some VMs reboot (no pattern so far) after the backup is complete. In the system event log, I see:

    The previous system shutdown at 02:48:29 on 02/02/2011 was unexpected.

    The last entries in the vmware.log for this VM are as follows:

    I can't see any obvious problems. Any ideas on what else to look at?

    What are you using for the backups, or can you describe the backup process?

    Does hostd show anything that may indicate what is occurring.

    I'm seeing these entries in hostd:

    [2011-02-25 02:19:44.734 'ha-eventmgr' 117648304 info] Event 9 : xxx on  yyy in ha-datacenter is reset
    [2011-02-25 02:19:44.734 'vm:/vmfs/volumes/494a2188-625c847b-75c2-001a64db468e/xxx/yyy.vmx' 117648304 info] State Transition (VM_STATE_ON -> VM_STATE_RESETTING)

    I have a feeling it might be related to http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1007899.

    Are these VM's monitored  in HA as if they time out on the heartbeat HA will automatically restart them?
