Virtualization Job Descriptions and Title

I am in the process of undergoing responsbility changes and a rehash of my existing job description to more closely match my responsibilties within our company. Due to my extensive involvement in our virtualization environment I have been asked to provide an official job description that outlines a number of day-to-day responsibilities involved in that aspect of my role along with our storage administration so that they can be combined along with wintel server administrator roles.

I am curious if anyone here, primarily those working in larger IT departments - have job titles that mention or reflect their virtualization responsibilities and if so what is your job title. Also, has anyone come across any industry standard job descriptions for virtual server/environment administrators?

I am a Virtualisation Consultant located in the Service Delivery Team. I look after the VMware and the SAN in a heterogenous ennvironment. I think they made up the title for me when I came on board, they tend to throw anything virtual or storage related my way.

Well I am currently working at one of the worlds largest telecomunications companies and I have not come accross

a permanent employee with a virtualisation specific job title as yet, however I am sure they will slowly be introduced.

My job title is current "VMware/Citrix Consultant" and in my last position it was as "Technical Consultant" with both

roles focusing on virtualisation only.

I have come accross a permie roles being advertised with the job titles being "VMware Specialist", just never worked

in an IT department yet who employee them.

Are you guys permanent employees? I find it interesting that a company would hire on a permanent employee using a job title with consultant in the name.

I figured the US job market would have some official virtualization specific job descriptions and titles out there by now. Although the role is really a combination of storage and server administration in most environments, there is still a special focus.

No, I am a consultant so I work on a contract basis and basically move to another client when the contract/work is finished.

I am a consultant as well, I suspect you're after permanent job titles.

Yes I was after permanent job titles. My apologizes for not stating as such in the original post. I had it in there and re-wrote what I had and excluded that by mistake.

I think "Virtual Infrastructure" is a good starting point for a job title. For example:

• Virtual Infrastructure Systems Administrator

• Virtual Infrastrcture Storage Admin

• Virtual Infrastructure Architect

Hey Matt. That is actually the way we leaning. It would be nice if somene had an official job description they would be willing to share.

When I am looking to update job descriptions I go to the job sites like Dice or Monster and search for the terms of interest (Virtual, VMWare, SAN, iSCSI, etc) and take out portions of the job description that I like to create or update an existing in house job description.

Permanent job titles would be suitable are:

1. VMware Administrator

2. VMware Engineer

3. VMware Architect

4. VMware SME (Subject Matter Expert)

5. Virtualization Engineer/Administrator/Architect

Consultant titles are:

1. VMware Consultant

2. Sr. VMware Consultant

3. VMware Architect

4. Sr. VMware Architect

5. Virtualization Consultant
