    Hi Guys,

I need some advice please currently we are running around 100VMs on ESXi 4.x on 4 hosts with VCentre, this is backed up by Legato Networker 7.5 via VCB to tape.

We are in the progress off planning an upgrade to ESXi5 including a hardware refresh. Apparently Legato Networker 7.5 does not support ESXi5 via VCB backups any longer and we will need to upgrade Legato as well.

Then we have the requirement to replicate some of our VMs (only around 20) to a remote location over a 100meg link.

I am considering Veeam Backup and Replication as a solution. I have only had good comments about the replication part but what about the backup part, can it replace something like Legato? Thinking that we will backup to disk with Veeam and then still use Legato to dump those to tape. This will save some costs on Legato licensing.  Any pitfalls or other plans?

    Any advice will be appreciated!

    Thanks!

Veeam B&R can certainly replace Legato. You can perfectly backup to disk and then offload to tape but I don't think it will be any problem using Veeam to backup directly towards the tapes.

You can always test run Veeam for 60 days with a trial. This includes the full enterprise options.

As far as I know Veeam can not backup to tape directly.

Indeed, I stand corrected. You'll have to backup to disk and then move the backups towards disk.

It might work if you can create some sort of share with tapes but I have no experience on tapes :smileysad:
