  • 1.  VDR DNS name change / VMware tools update

Doesn't anyone know how to change the DNS name inside of the VDR vm? It keeps showing up as localhost.localdom. It's easy change the IP info but nowhere does it ask for DNS info.

Also the VDR complains to update manager about VMware tools not being up to date. Is the game plan for every release of VDR to have VMware tools installed or can it be upgraded like any other vm?

VDR will configure hostname from DNS at appliance startup time. Make sure you have forward and reverse records set in DNS, and DNS servers correctly set in appliance network config.

VDR has jeOS VMware tools installed by default, those are somewhat stripped version of tools shipping with ESX, but there is no need to upgrade tools inside appliance.

Adding the hostname to DNS worked great. Just seems sort of weird especially if you're using DHCP because it then pulls the name of the computer last using that IP address. Luckily I'm using static addressing but I could foresee servers getting duplicate names if you are using DHCP.

Yes it was meant to be a private backup appliance, not considered a VM. The name is local, the external referrence is the IP address

You will find MOST appliances are like this, and this one was adopted from another company, and the tools are for VM's, and since this is a backup appliance, and not a VM there isn't a need to update the tools. It was tested to work the way it IS, so the drivers don't need to be updated.
