You can upgrade for free. I just did this today.
Enter this link in your browser:
https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/ws/17.6.1/24319023/windows/core/VMware-workstation-17.6.1-24319023.exe.tar
It is a 245MiB download. Use a utility to extract all files from the tar into a new folder. There are two files within. Make sure VMWare is not currently running. If it is, exit all guests and close it completely. Execute VMware-workstation-17.6.1-24319023.exe ad administrator.
I agree that this is lame. I found all this from checking the logs.

Subject: upgrading to version 17.6 from version 17.5
I am a self-employed person using VMWare's Workstation Pro for my work for MANY YEARS for the design, build, and programming of industrial control systems. I currently have Workstation Pro 17.5 and got a notice to upgrade to version 17.6. I have ALWAYS upgraded in the past, usually it was a free upgrade if it's the same basic version (i.e. 15) or i would always pay for the next basic version upgrade.
Lately I have been getting notices of the new version 17.6, and today I decided to try to get this upgrade.
However, now that Broadcom owns VMWare's products, I am advised I can only get the upgrade if I subscribe to the annual service contract for $120/year. I despise subscriptions and avoid them as much as I can, but i still sometimes I cannot avoid them, so I tried.
When I tried to subscribe, because I do not have a "corporate address" (such as "fred@fredscompany.com"), it will NOT allow me to purchase a service contract.
What this means that self-employed users like me are now SCREWED from getting any more updates to my VMWare workstation.
BROADCOM- PLEASE FIX THIS!!!!!!!!!
