  • 1.  Upgrade vROPS 6.7.0 to 8.0

    Hello,

    We currently have vRealize Operation Manager 6.7.0.8183617 running in a 2 node cluster setup. We are wondering if it is possible to upgrade to 8.0 without loosing the already collected data. We know this was the case from version 6.0 to 6.7. Or should we setup 2 new servers? Thanks for the feedback.

    I already ran vRealize Operations Manager Pre-Upgrade to 8.0.1 Assessment Tool which looks "sort of" promising.

    Validating product version

    Make sure to run vRealize Operations Manager - 6.6.1, 6.7, 7.0 and 7.5 Virtual Appliance upgrade, as product version is 6.7.0 Ensure product and upgrade versions meet the requirements.

    Validating there are no Active Self Monitoring Alerts existing on the cluster.
    2 ACTIVE alerts, ALERT_DEFINITION: 1. vRealize Operations Cluster processes may not have enough memory 2. Error synchronizing user privilege information with VMware Virtual Center

    When upgrading to a newer version you will not loose already collected data.

    I recommend to read the release notes before upgrading and fix the issues if needed mentioned in the report of the assessment tool.

    Verify and check the solution adapters if they are compatible and supported with version 8.0.

    Before you perform the upgrade of vRealize Operations Manager, take the nodes in the cluster offline and take a snapshot of each node. If you must perform a rollback of vRealize Operations Manager to the previous state, these snapshots accelerate the rollback operation.

    High level steps:

    1. Run Assessment tool and review report.

    2. Take cluster offline.

    3. Create a snapshot of each node in the cluster

    4. Install the product update using vRealize_Operations_Manager-VA-xxx.pak, in this case you need to use the vRealize Operations Manager 6.6.1, 6.7, 7.0, and 7.5 Virtual Appliance upgrade .pak file.

    5. Verify if upgrade is completed successfully

    6. Bring cluster online if not done already by upgrade process.

    7. Remove the snapshot of each node after successful upgrade.

    Upgrade is running since yesterday afternoon. Is it normal this takes +12 hours?

    Both cluster nodes have below specs.

    Because it is updating to a Photon OS the expected size of the root partition should be 20GB.

    Having a look to see if it has to do with the root partition. See VMware Knowledge Base​ for information and resolution.

    I guess the upgrade is hanging, that could be a reason why it is taking so long.

    Issue got resolved by adding another step (4).

    1. Run Assessment tool and review report.

    2. Take cluster offline.

    3. Create a snapshot of each node in the cluster

    4. Make sure the cluster is online before you do the upgrade else the upgrade gets stuck during installation.

    5. Install the product update using vRealize_Operations_Manager-VA-xxx.pak, in this case you need to use the vRealize Operations Manager 6.6.1, 6.7, 7.0, and 7.5 Virtual Appliance upgrade .pak file.

    6. Verify if upgrade is completed successfully

    Hi there!

    Thank you for your remarks regarding the vrOPs update process. I'm currently doing the same, while from 7.0 to 8.1 - how long would a normal update be expected to take? I'm waiting for the completion of step 4/9 for about 2 hours by now, although having followed all the described steps.

    Upgrade from vROPS 6.7 to 8.0 is supported as per the below VMware Product Interoperability matrix:

    As RickVerstegen​ rightly pointed the steps, please run the vROPS assessment tool to validate all the dashboards, alerts, metrics if anything is deprecated in the latest versions. Take a snapshot of the nodes when the cluster is offline and then proceed with the upgrade. Also validate the solution adapters if they are compatible with the vROPS 8.0

    We currently have vRealize Operation Manager 6.7.0.8183617 running. We are trying to upgrade  from 6.7 to 8.0.

    Upgrade got stuck during installation for more than 12 hours.

    1. Run Assessment tool and review report.

    2. Take cluster offline.

    3. Create a snapshot of each node in the cluster

    4. Uploaded the VIrtual appliance pak  "vRealize_Operations_Manager-VA-8.0.0.14857694, Upgrade got stuck during installation for more than 12 hour.

    Can anyone help us to resolve this issue.

    Have you got more than one ethernet connection? if so remove so you only have one connection. Additional connections can be added after upgrade.
