Hi again, hi Technogeezer,
(I am resposting this as "Open-ended Discussion", because I wasn't aware that posting it as a question stops me from responding...)
Technogeezer, thank you for suggestion to have a look at this thread: https://community.broadcom.com/vmware-cloud-foundation/communities/community-home/digestviewer/viewthread?GroupId=7165&MessageKey=743f4095-d9aa-40fb-81ba-bf47c4124d1a&CommunityKey=0c3a2021-5113-4ad1-af9e-018f5da40bc0
However, I don't see how this relates to my problem. Maybe I missed something. The person in that thread has trouble creating installer images, but once they manage to do so, they were finally able to run the installer. (I have been using the tools described in that thread to create the installer image previously.)
So, in my case, I am already booting from the installer image in into the VM:
But it always fails with this error:
Here is my original post:
Hi everyone,
I have been googling for days and I have not been making any progress.
My goal:
- Run any MacOS version as a guest on my Intel Macbook from 2019 using Vmware Fusion
My setup:
- VMWare Fusion Version 13.6.4 (24832108)
- Host operating system: Sonoma 14.7.6 (23H626) -- but I have also tried this on a clean install (!) of 15.5
- Macbook Pro from 2019 with Intel i9 ("MacBookPro16,4")
My problem:
- when booting into the MacOS installation image that I created, the installation does not start. Instead, the black screen with a crossed out circle pointing me to an Apple support sight shows up. This is what it looks like: https://support.apple.com/en-us/101666
What I have tried so far:
- I tried to install the guest using the ("from recovery partition") in VMware
- I tried to install the guest using a bootable installer image ("from ISO image")
- I tried to install using "custom virtual machine" and then booting into a bootable installer image
- I used older and newer versions of the guest operating system installer (High Sierra, Ventura, Catalina, Monterey, Sonoma, Sequoia)
- I used a couple of older versions of VMware that are available from the Broadcom download section.
- I clean installed MacOS Sequoia (on an external USB drive), booted into it, installed VMware Fusion and tried to install the guest from a CDR-image.
- Today I finally even tried to mess with the .vmx files with different settings I found online (like hw.model etc.)
All of these always ended with the same result:
The installer boots from the virtual CD and then stops with the black screen described above.
General info:
- There was no thid-party software and no other Macs involved in creating the installers.
- I created the installer "CD boot-image" (CDR image created using Disk Utility) from the official installers that I download to this Macbook, after running "createinstallmedia" from each respective installer.
- Except when I tried (5) above, I was using the internal drive. In (5) I made the clean install on an external USB drive, booted from that into Sequoia, installed VMWare and so on.
If anybody has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it!
Best
Stefan
