A Workstation guest does not and can not directly access the host GPU. The VM is presented with a virtualized VMware SVGA graphics adapter. Trying to spoof the identifier makes no difference in the graphics capability. It may break things since an incompatible driver may be selected by the operating system. That driver may try to use GPU hardware features that don't exist in the virtualized adapter.

I've done a wider search on the web and have come up with a few people asking the same question, but none of the answers indicate a solution to the question.
