  • 1.  Recover deleted files from datastore (iscsi from FreeNAS)

    Posted Apr 19, 2015 09:23 PM

    Hello,

I've got a problem. I'd connected iscsi target from FreeNAS as datastore to vmware host (ESXi 5.0.0) and used 100GB (30% of all capaticy) for D drive (data) in windows server virtual machine. Accidently I've deleted this datastore and didn't notice info about removing files that are associated to virtual machines. After all I reconnect this datastore, but it's empty. The capaticy is 300GB and the whole datastore is empty (in datastore browser). I'm wondering now is is possible to recover this file, because when I logged to my FreeNAS host and run 'df -h' I got info that the extent which is associated with my target has still 100GB used (which are all of my lost files). Does it mean that these files are stil located in this extent? Maybe there is a way to get my files recovered?

    Thanks for help!

    Hi Ulli,

Thanks for reply. Can you give me some tips? I saw, you prepared ISO disk with tools to run, but the ftp links don't work. I installed debian 7 virtual guest on this vmware host, and vddk from vmware. Now I'm trying to mount this GPT /dev/sdc1 partiotion. I can't connect skype right now. Maybe when I come back from work.
Can you tell me is it possible to get back this data?

    Thanks in advance

    FTP-links ? They must be old - see http://sanbarrow.com/MOA64-Recovery-environment.html" title="http://sanbarrow.com/MOA64-Recovery-environment.html
or a slightly older one with GUI - this will only boot from MBR noit UEFI:
    sanbarrow.com/iscsiworkshop/moa64dvd.iso
First thing to try is to mount the VMFS with vmfs-fuse and see if the file is still readable:
    mkdir /vmfs
vmfs-fuse [device name for vmfs partition] /vmfs
The devicename may be something like
    /dev/sda3
    /dev/sdb1
or - if you work with a running ESXI
    /esxi/dev/disks/mpx.vmhba3:0:0:1
Please let me know if you need help and call me in skype :
2 minutes in skype is more useful than a forum-post that would take me an hour.
