  • 1.  Moving to Windows 11 host - Workstation 17 license

    Hi guys!

I'm currently running Workstation on a Windows 10 Pro host, and planning to replace M/B and the CPU to be able to upgrade to Windows 11. My current hardware is from 2017 and does not support Windows 11.

    1. Can I move my current Workstation license to the new Motherboard (the old M/B goes out of scope)?
    2. Does Workstation 17.6.3 support Windows 11 ?

The reason for this upgrade is that Windows 10 support ends this year.

    TIA

      a) VMware Pro does not have a license anymore, it is Free (since Nov 2024)
      b) Well, for Windows 11 you need a new license key, or an Upgrade from Win10 which is just very awkward. Win 11 Pro licenses are not expensive, no reason to do an upgrade (which might not give you Pro in the first place).

      Even 17.5.2 supports Windows 11.

    Hello !

Thank you very much for the information! I was really surprised to learn that Workstation Pro, now is for free.

I realize I dint explain my upgrade plan. I'm planning to swap M/B and keep the same boot drive, hoping that the current Windows 10 Pro and it's installed programs works as is. I only have a few programs installed (VMware Workstation Pro is one of them).

So when (hopefully) up and running on new hardware the machine can be upgraded to Windows 11 when needed.

    All the best!

    OK, thanks for explaining further.

That should work. I usually prefer new installs, instead of Upgrades - especially with complicated software. But that is also a matter of taste. Just a tip - Win 11 Pro licenses are not expensive.

It appears that I haven't taken a break from my code in a while, as there seems to be a lot going on that I wasn't aware of. :)

Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated!

    All the best!
