  • 1.  Minimum space to leave on Datastore if used only for Data Drives?

    Posted Jun 09, 2011 02:34 AM

I have 400GB VMFS Datastore. I need to use all of it for the Data Drive lets call it D:\ on a certain VM.

    1) Is this a common practice can I assign all the space on the VMFS Datastore to a VM without any issues? This storage will be used for Data drive only so no Snapshots, logs vswap, etc It will be vmdk file only is that assumption correct?

    2) Is there a way to remove the Alarm for that Datastore since its all used up but should not create an Alarm since it will be static storage?

    Thanks...................

i would leave around 5% for vswap file and logs and etc .. with assumption there is no growth on the thin disk, snapshots and log files ..

vswap would normally be kept with the .vmx. We are running this type of configuration in our environment and the only thing that is also situated in the vmfs is the CBT log, but that will only appear if you are running a backup that utilises Change Block Tracking.

You can edit the alarms in vCenter (defintions). I think you would need to create a new alarm with no alerting or alerting disabled and assign it directly to the datastore in question.

    Hello.

There are hidden files on the VMFS volume and there needs to be some free space left on the volume, assuming that CBT, snapshots, etc will never be used on this volume.  We're not talking a lot of space, but you cannot fill it to 100%.  Check out kb 1001618 and kb 1003412 for more information.

    Good Luck!
