The article recommends removing all peripheral devices connected to their Mac when they attempt the update.
I never have in the past, but perhaps a good practice to avoid any of the issues listed in the article?

No issues here. I'm on an M1 Mac mini and all of my Linux and Windows VMs are working as they did before the upgrade.
