HP Tape Drive not detected on Virtual Machine

I recently build a ESX server as Vpshere 4.0 and have HP local disk attached with it and configured raid over same.

Over my physical ESX server i have a tape drive attached " HP storage works 1840 sas". I build a VM over same ESX..but i cant see any tape drive under device manager of VM.

Kindly suggest the steps needs to be done ..am doing it first time..so be i am missing something.

You need to configure a passthrough device:

thanks, but i cannot see the option of "PCI Device under my Vpshere client" I am connecting directly to the ESX. do i need to connect with VC server from there i get this option.

as well i tried running command on ESX : cat /proc/scsi/scsi and i am getting below message..

"

I hope my tape drive is not getting detected. i already tried to rescan the storage adapter form Vpshere client to ESX and i can see there

Serverworks HT 1000 IDE/PATA controller

vmhba2 BlockSCSI

vmhba32 Block SCSI

No, you do not have to connect to vCenter. Check the tab nder "Configuration > Advanced Settings (or similar, I do not have the Englich GUI).

It is called "VMDirectPath".

yes, i got that option now. But that option is currently showing as "PCI device (unavailable)" and the info as rightside window is "" the device cannot be added to this Virtual machine because:

there are no devices reserved for PCI passthrough on the host.

suggestions please?

AFAIK the PCI device where the tape is attached to is not allowed to hold shared devices (disks for example, which are already used by ESX for VMFS or as RDM, for example).

just an update that when i tried to search -

1. under /proc/scsi i see a folder named as pata_serverworks and

2. under directory there are two directories "1" and "2"

3. cat 1 give the output as :the driver does not yet support the proc-fs

4. cat 2 give the output as :the driver does not yet support the proc-fs

ideas?

If you are running ESX(i) 4.1, then there are issues detecting SCSI devices.

We had to do the steps outlined in this thread:

We did not configure a PCI passthrough. You can just add a SCSI device, and choose Tape - HP in the wizard, assuming your server can detect the drive.

Hello,

Any Tape Device must be connected to a NON-RAID SCSI Controller preferably an Adaptec. If you connect to a RAID based SCSI controller you will not be able to see the tape device. This also ensures that you have a unique device for the Tape device. VMDirectPath requires Single Root IO Virtualization and does not currently support Multi-Root IOV. So for now you are stuck using a non-raid SCSI device to connect a tape to ESX.

Physically check by opening up the box would be the way I would do it. Or if you cannot look where the cable is connected to the chassis, if its connected to a card then check the type of card. If its connected to the Chassis MB then its most likely a RAID card.

If you have access to the management appliance or service console you can also run lspci and determine the type of SCSI device available. You should also be able to get this information from the vSphere Client under teh Storage Adapters link within the Configuration tab.

Yes it does. Been using SAS for ages now, even with 3.5.
