  • 1.  How do you keep several restore points?

    Posted Aug 11, 2016 08:40 PM

I have used VEEAM and NAKIVO and each product allows for multiple restore points and does not delete all of the backups all at once.

For instance, I have backups run ever evening and keep up to 10 restore points as the retention policy.

The he software will delete the oldest one, so I will always have at least 10.

In VDP, I set up the retention policy "Keep" option to Daily for 10 days.

After the 10th day, all of the backups are deleted and a new cycle starts over.

How can I set this up to keep 10 backups and only delete the older one so I always have 10 restore points.

    thanks

Looks like you are not using correct retention policy for your backup.

You need to choose for "X" day(s) option, where X is number of days. Please refer the attached screenshot image. The number of days option  showing retention of backup up to 60 days(red circled). Please choose this option to keep each backup for minimum 10(or X) days.

    A couple of items,,

Using your image as an example, I have currently selected the option "this Schedule" and "Daily for: 14 days".

    First:

I am not clear on what is going on with the retention policy.

Under the “Restore” tab, I see the VMs listed like,

    DEV-VM-don,

    DEV-VM-pat, etc.

and clicking on the name, shows the VM and date and currently 7 backups dated 8/11 – 8/17

However, I also noticed under the “Restore” tab, there appeared new names, such as

    DEV-VM-don2016.08.10.12.47,

    DEV-VM-pat2016.08.10.12.46

These shows the VM and date and currently 8 backups dated 8/3 – 8/10.

I am not sure what the rollover to appending at date represents?

    Second:

Will selecting the "X" for 14 day(s) option always keep 14 days worth of backups, as they occur the oldest is deleted, as in:

    8/1, 8/2, 8/3........8/15

    8/2, 8/3, 8/4........8/16

    First:

I think u have configured multiple(more than 1) backup/retention policies for listed VM's, that's why it is showing different restore points.

Please check attached screenshot showing restore points for a VM. I had configured retention policy as 10 days i.e each backup retained for 10 days. So each restore point expiration date and backup date difference is 10 days.

    Second:

Yes. selecting X Days option always keep x days worth of backups.

Please check "Table 12-18. Retention Policy Options" of https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-60/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vmware-data-protection-administration-guide-61.pdf for more details.
