  • 1.  Formatting a disk as VMFS in ubuntu?

Hello, I'm running a few tests to add some bargain basement cheap storage to our platform. I want to use an ubuntu server. We've used NFS for this in the past but I'm not terribly keen on NFS.

I've been testing with using the server as an iSCSI target and I've got as far as making the connection to the server but the ESX host rejects it. I'm presuming that the disk on the store needs to be formatted as VMFS for this to work. I've found instructions on how to mount VMFS partitions in ubuntu but I can't figure out how to actually format it as VMFS in the first place.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

There's no need to format the LUN prior to connecting it to an ESXi host. First you need to find out why the ESXi host cannot access the LUN. Once the connection is established, the datastore (VMFS partition) can be created using the "Add Storage" wizard in the vSphere Client.
