  • 1.  "File not found" during installation of Fusion 12.2.4 on Intel Mac with macOS Ventura 13.0 upgraded

    Posted Oct 28, 2022 11:45 PM

I migrated my intel iMac boot up to an external SSD, and upgraded macOS to Ventura 13.0. Then I opened the VMware Fusion 12 and was told that version 12.2.4 was available.  I downloaded Fusion 12.2.4 and during installation, a VMware windows popped up saying File not Found. A notification came up saying "Software from "VMware, Inc." added items that can run in the background. You can manage this in Login Items Settings." I clicked on the notification and Systems Settings (used to be System Preferences) > General > Login Items window popped up and under "Allow in the Background I could see that  VMware, Inc had 6 items: 6 items affect all users was Enabled.

Is Fusion 1.2.2.4 compatible with macOS Ventura 13.0?  If so, how can I fix the problem and run Fusion 12.2.4?

    Opinion:

Fusion 12 isn’t listed as supporting Ventura and IMO probably won’t officially be listed as compatible, even if it does seem to run. VMware seldom retrofits older versions of Fusion to support new macOS releases. Instead they release a new version to provide that support. Based on what VMware has been hinting over the last few weeks,  I expect a new Fusion 13 to be released shortly that has official MacOS 13 Ventura support.

Also according to VMware’s software lifecycle policy, Fusion 12 only has a couple more months left before all support for it will be dropped so it’s doubtful they’ll expend more effort on it

The notifications about background process seem to be normal and are an articact of security enhancements in Ventura. Fusion adds background peocess definitions to macOS when you start the GUI, amd removes them when you exit it. Monterey and earlier didn’t notify you but Ventura does.

Not sure about the “File not found” error from the installer, though.

Is Fusion 12 up and running for you on Ventura?

I fully uninstalled Fusion 12.  Upgraded macOS to Sonoma 14.5. Installed VMware Fusion Pro 13.5.2 on the same iMac 2017.  Same result - "File not found.".

If you could post a quick support bundle there might be something in there that might give us a clue about what it might be complaining about.

In the Fusion menu, click Help > Collect Support Information > Quick, then post the resulting zip file in a reply.

Have you tried to move the VMware Fusion application from the .dmg bundle into the Applications folder, and then execute it from there.

Have you verified the download with the checksums that are provided by Broadcom on the download site? Also, do you have any third-party anti-virus running on the Mac?

What's the Mac model that you're running? Any use of OpenCore Legacy Patcher?

    Paul, thank you for reply.

Yes I verified the downloaded file, I shutdown the AV client. I have an Apple M3 Max with 14.6.1 OS version.

Did you have any VMs that were set to start automatically when Fusion is started and may have been moved to a new location?

Try a complete uninstall of Fusion per https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/307074/how-to-uninstall-vmware-fusion-manually.html (making sure that you get the files present in your user account's "hidden" Library folder).  This won't touch your existing VMs, but you will need to reinstall any licensing). Then reinstall Fusion.
