  • 1.  File History on Windows 11 VM is stuck saving copies of files for the first time.

I'm running VMware Workstation Pro  17.6.3 on a Windows 11 host computer for the Survey of Operating Systems that I teach. I've created a Windows 11 VM. We only have our internal system hard drive and no access to external USB drives.  I read that File History will not work on a partition, with one caveat.  If a logical partition is shared on the network and there is a folder that is shared on that logical drive, then it can be used with File History.

After MUCH playing around, I was able to get File History to recognize a shared folder on my shared logical drive.  I go to File History in Control Panel and see the option to Turn On File History.  I turn it on, and click on Run.  I then try to Restore Personal Files and get a message that File History is saving copies of your files for the first time. You won't be able to access copies of your files until this is complete. This may take a while.

This is a small 2GB test partition that I just created. There is no software installed, other than what Windows installs during installation, and I only have one test file that I put on the desktop.  I know it says "This may take a while"  but after 6 hours I think there's some kind of hic-cup.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ken
