  • 1.  Error while powering on: The operation was cancelled by the user

    Hello everybody! I need help with my VMware Workstation 16 Player.

    A few days ago everything was fine. I shut down the vm, no problems. But when i tried to power it on -three days after- I got this message:

    Error while powering on: The operation was cancelled by the user

    Cannot open the disk 'C:\Users\mich\Documents\Virtual Machines\SIFT\SIFT-disk1.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

    Module 'Disk' power on failed.

    Failed to start the virtual machine.

     

    I searched the web but so fahr the proposed solutions didn't work for me. The log files have been attached below. Please help!

    Two possible reasons could be, that:

    1. the VM's folder is included in OneDrive sync.
    2. one or more of the required .vmdk files (in case of the split format) is missing

    From the error message in the log files, I tend to the OneDrive issue.

    I don't use OneDrive, so this won't be it.

    Regarding the 2. possible reason:

    There is a vmdk in the directory, but only one. Here is the directory listing:

    That's interesting.

    FileIOCreateRetryEx: CreateFileW() returned ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION, failing with FILEIO_CANCELLED.

    What you may do, is to use a tool like e.g. Process Monitor to find out whether another task/application has access to that .vmdk file.

    I would like to say, this was my issue. Was driving me crazy. 

    After turning off OneDrive Sync everything worked
