Error when stopping VM since 17.6.3 update

  • 1.  Error when stopping VM since 17.6.3 update

    Posted Mar 17, 2025 10:15 AM

    Hi community,

I am facing errors on VMWare Workstation Pro v17.6.3 every time I shutdown my (unique) VM.

Everything was running fine before updating to version 17.6.3. The errors I have :

vmx [msg.log.error.unrecoverable] VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vmx)
vmx Exception 0xc0000005 (access violation) has occurred.

When shutting down my VM, VMWare asks me no more taking snapshots, and errors are throwing.

Unlike this situation, the VM runs well and I don't face issues using it but wondering what can cause them and what might occur in the future since I am preparing for a certification and don't want my VM to be corrupted before the exam (even if I made snapshots and backups of it).

    Thank you in advance.

I have updated to 17.6.3 without this error but I do not take snapshoot at shutdown. Try to disable this option.

The actual settings is set to "Ask me" so I can take a snapshot when needed. Setting it to "Just Power Off" don't change the situation.

My bad regarding my previous answer. It looks like that setting Snpashot VM to "Just power off", I do not face the error no more when powering off VM. When setting it back to "Ask me", the error is throwing again when stopping VM the same way.

    Hi,

I can't find the "Just power off" or "Ask me" options under snapshot feature from UI. Can you explain more or have a screenshot to show us what these options are?

    Hi,

You can just edit VM settings > Options tab > Snapshots (see attachment).

FYI, I have found the root cause and fixed it internally. The fix should come with next release.

I understand why people keep on upgrading, because that is the normal thing to do with software.

But in this case - why did you Upgrade? There is nothing better in newer versions that 17.5.2 - based on this Forum just numerous problems. If you want to play safe - which I take it, is your main concern now - use that version.

    (Behind this is evidently Broadcom-buying-VMware-hassle.)

I've updated to fix a critical security vulnerability on VMWare Workstation (CVE-2025-22224) allowing an attacker with admin privileges on a guest VM to execute code on its host.

"I've updated to fix a critical security vulnerability on VMWare Workstation (CVE-2025-22224) allowing an attacker with admin privileges on a guest VM to execute code on its host."

    OK, that is a reason.

I guess it depends on what everybody is doing on the Guest. I'm not really doing anything in Internet, on the Guest, and thus somebody getting Admin privileges on the Guest are rather far fetched. I understand, that Microsoft Windows likes to do a lot of things, even if you don't want - like pushing the News and what not at your face, when you are trying to do something real. But I use NAT mode, never Bridged mode, because there is no reason (for me) to use Bridged mode ... that makes some difference.

However, if you think that this is important, isn't it far more likely for the attacker to take control of the Host itself, than the VM under NAT. Yet again, depends on what people are doing and if their system is isolated from "everything else" or are they trying to do everything on a single laptop. I would never do corporation-stuff with the same technical computer where virtualization is running.
