I've seen the VIO documentation about backing up the VIO/OpenStack infrastructure VMs themselves, but are there solutions for DR and backup of tenant workloads? What about DR for VIO/OpenStack Infrastructure VMs?

With regard to backup of tenant workloads, they are vsphere VMs and NSX edge VMs and backing up vsphere, NSX should take care of that.

The overall backup would look like

    1. backup vio config and db

    2. backup vsphere

    3. backup nsx

At the moment there is no DR solution built into VIO for the infrastructure or the tenant workloads.

Just curious, what kind of workloads are these?

Thanks.  Let's talk about the non-NSX deployment model.  How can I backup tenant VMs? There must be products that support the backup and restore of OpenStack tenant VMs.  Similar to vCloud Director, I imagine a backup product would need to be OpenStack-aware since it's not just vCenter managing the VMs.

With regard to DR of both management and tenant workloads, there doesn't have to be built-in solutions.  Are there any third-party solutions that support VMware Integrated OpenStack DR? My googling didn't find any.

The workloads will be a few existing Oracle Linux and Windows Server machines imported into OpenStack, then net new VMs of the same type created by OpenStack.

I am not aware of any third party solutions that do DR for VIO.

With regard to backups, any standard VM backup solution for vsphere should work, since the openstack (VIO) instances are vsphere VMs. The trick would be to sync those backups with vio control plane backup - because if they are done at different time they may represent different state and recovery will be a problem. To make it easy to sync the state between vio and vsphere, there is tool in vio to do that, in case the states go out of sync.
