CreateSnapshot failed

    Hi there.

I am trying to backup my VM systems using the VEEAM backup software.

We have licensed VMware vSphere 4 Essentials.

The guest OS I try to backup is a MS Windows 2003 Server R2 Standard x64 (with an installed MS SQL Express Edition database). The VMware tools are installed in the newest version (v8.1.3 build-203739). VSS was activated in the VMware tools installation process.

If I now try to start a backup job in VEEAM, I get two errors:

    First error:

VssGAConn: Guest operation system is not supported, type EVeeamOsXP, platform EVeeamAmd64, version 5.2

Second error (I think this is the "major error"):

CreateSnapshot failed, vmRef "vm-40", timeout "1800000", snName "VEEAM BACKUP TEMPORARY SNAPSHOT", snDescription "Please do not delete this snapshot. It is being used by Veeam Backup.", memory "False", quiesce "True"

Can not create a quiesced snapshot Because the snapshot create operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I / O in the frozen virtual machine.

    The veeam-support says this:

"It appears the snapshot operation cannot be performed manually, this would indicate an issue with VMware tools quiescence on that server. You will need to contact VMware support in regards to this operation failing."

I´m going crazy, because I dont know what I can do to solve the problem.

Perhaps anybody can help me here... ?!

    Thank you in advance.

    Benjamin from LVGStuttgart in Germany

This looks to be a File System Quiesce issue. I e, when the backup snapshot is getting created, the I/O operations (in your case the database operations, could be) aren't getting frozen. There could be such issues with some applications. I would suggest to run a backup when there is zero / less I/O happening; or to enable sync driver rather than using VSS. I e from add/ remove programs, MODIFY the VMware tools and un check the VSS component from the installed drivers list and run the installer again.

Let me know if you could proceed any further with it.

Check that VSS is not only running but also enabled on each partition.

Could you tell me how to check if VSS is enabled on each partition?

    Thank you in advance!

Open the disk manager and right-click on a partition, choose "Properties" and look for the Volume Shadow Service tab. There you can see if it is enabled or not.

Please excuse my questions, but could you please explain, where I have to search for the "disk manager"...I have a german OS and the names are different :smileysad:

Do you mean the Windows compuer management - drive manager inside the guest OS or do you mean a VM software.

Thank you for your patient help...

Rechts-klick auf das Computersymbol, Verwalten, dann geht die "Computerverwaltung" auf. Dort auf "Datenträgerverwaltung" klicken.

    Hallo.

Dort habe ich kein Tab "Volume Shadow Service" in keiner Partition.

Ich finde hier lediglich: Allgemein, Extras, Hardware, Freigabe, Sicherheit, Kontingent

Bedeutet das, dass VSS nicht korrekt läuft?

That seems so. This tab is only there if the service is running correctly.

I looked into the "services" overview and discovered, that the service "volume shadow copies" was set to "manual start" and was not started. I turned it to "automatically" and started the service.

But anyway, in the disk manager, there is no tab for VSS - still only the previous named tabs.

What is wrong? Could anybody give me a hint?
