I installed Ubuntu 24.10 on WMware Workstation Pro 17.6.2 build-24409262 (Ubuntu is guest on Windows 11). I ran the typical install and I left all the settings as they were by default (memory allocated, disk, etc.). Ubuntu works but it looks like I can't access the disk, nor other directories above Home. There's no disk or path through which I can get to the disk. I can get all the hard disk stats from other utilities, but by using File I can't access any directory except Home, Documents, etc. Do you have any idea why? Any help is appreciated   :-)

    As for "any help".

This is an ubuntu-only problem, right?

If you cannot access them with "file manager", you are not an Administrator. Obviously, the installer login will be that, but somehow you are using something else as a login.

Just make sure that you ARE the installer, or if something really weird happened - cannot anticipate what that might be - redo the installation and be careful there when giving the first login name and password.

I don't know what "File" is for an application - isn't there something else as a default "file manager". Sorry, don't remember/know exactly, because I have skipped Ubuntu already some time ago, and I am using Ubuntu Studio and Kubuntu, instead - they have different default applications. For instance Kubuntu has Dolphin.

First of all, thanks for your kind reply. I installed the latest version many times (at least 5 times today), only to discover that the LTS version doesn't "feature" this defect: I could not understand the nature of the issue (my host SO, my machine, the guest SO, drivers, really don't know), the only thing I know is the LTS works, while the latest version not.   :-)

OK, there something wrong then in the 24.10 version ... or is it just that the "file manager" works wrong. That's what I tried to hint previously.

You could try to install another file manager and see if that works.

Also, if not obvious, you can go into command line and do things there. "sudo" is the command (or a prefix to a command), how to get the system to ask for Admin password. The password is the same as with your user, which - based on your description - is an Admin user.

I installed a file manager, but I didn't like it. So, I ended up installing the latest LTS: it works perfectly and it doesn't need any other software. I appreciate the general idea of making things progress, but this feature could be optional for the user.   :-)

Apparently, this is really a new feature I didn't knew about: https://discourse.gnome.org/t/other-locations-button-disappeared-solved/24289

OK. However, what happens with Ubuntu, I wouldn't call progress. They just don't care what their user interface does.

They DID have real progress, back in the day, with Unity GUI. They didn't have the courage of keeping it, because of the trash talk about it. People just couldn't get it, because of the hierarchial way of thinking, ruining people with all the Windows versions.

I moved from Ubuntu to Kubuntu, because of so many irregularities in the Ubuntu non-Unity GUI and its standard applications. Kubuntu doesn't have Unity either, but its default applications and GUI otherwise, work as they should - some of them are rather nice.
