  • 1.  Cannot install Workstation Pro v16.x on Win 11 - Microsoft Runtime DLL installer failed

    I am trying to install VMWare Workstation Pro v16.x on my new laptop.  It's got a 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900HX 2.20 GHz, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd HD...running Windows 11 Pro, 23H2, build 22631.3155.

The installer starts, get through the initial questions, and then the progress bar page, and nothing.  Sits there doing nothing at all.  I have rebooted, tried different versions, all of the basic troubleshooting stuff.  Any thoughts/ideas?  Is the OS too new?  Does v16.x not support it maybe?  I need to get this loaded for work, or I need to send back this laptop and get another...   (...its a Dell G16)

v16 is not supported in Windows 11, you'll need v17.

Hi  thanks for the update.  I went ahead and upgraded, but I am getting even less further than before with v17 (latest version).  Now the installer does not even appear, but I get this failure that says:

Setup cannot continue.  The Microsoft Runtime DLL installer failed to complete the installation.

Is this any know issue?  I did reboot per:  https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-Workstation-Pro/VMware-Workstation-Pro-installation-failed-Microsoft-Runtime-DLL/m-p/2923470, but that did not change anything.

VMWare Tech support was stumped as well, we collaborated searching Google, lol!

Ends up it had "something" to do with my VC Redistributions.  It was not easy (many, many reboots, and failures), but I finally was able to re-install vcredistx86 and vcredistx64, and after that, the software installed.

My going assumption is that one of them was not "up to date" and VMware tried and failed (based on how difficult it was to do so manually) to update it...so it just dumped that error message.  After I was able to update them, it worked.

If you are having similar trouble updating them, I recommend:

    • Make sure to disable all possible startup programs
    • Even if the install/update/uninstall fails, reboot.  It may have actually worked or mostly worked.
    • Keep trying until you see it reinstalled in add/remove programs...then try VMware again.

Hope this helps the next person!

I'm stuck in exactly the same position. Can you please post exactly what you did to resolve this? what are vcredistx86 and vcredistx64 and how do you reinstall them?

    Thanks
