  • 1.  Cannot install Debian Stable from iso taken from local disk

    Posted Sep 13, 2010 10:22 AM

    Hello,

Im fresh in VMware Virtualization, so don't be mad :smileywink:

I installed VMware ESXi 4.1 on the sever. Then i downloaded vSphere, connected to the server and i created new virtualmachine. Everything went good so far. After that, i turn on virtualmachine, open console and i pick up "connect/disconnect the CD/DVD...." -> "Connect to ISO image from local disk" . After that bebian instalator startign up. THe problem is that i cant go throught installation because no cd is found, so it can't copy files from it. Can someone tell me whats wrong, or what wrong i do? At creating virtualmachine stage, i pick up Debian GNU/linux 5 (32-bit)...

EDIT: ok. seems work right now..instalation proces work in progress...I simply picked up GNU/Linux 2.6.X 32bit from the list during vitrualmachine setting up, instead of Debian GNU/Linux 5 (32bit). Will see, if installation complete now..

Did you restart or reset the guest after you connected the ISO image ?

And is the ISO image from a bootable CD ?

Thanks, for you reply. Looka at my first post i edited it. Anyway replying to your questions:

NO, reseting guest means that i have to connect to local iso everytime again. I started guest machine and then i connected ISO. I belive it is the only way to install from local sio file

Yes, its Debian stable CD1 bootable image

What I meant was that you at least have to reboot the guest to pick up the boot from CD.

But it seems to be running now.

Ok, i tried to install another OS on another virtual machine and problem occur again. It seems that somehow installator loosing connection to the mounted iso. Maybe, somehow im loosing connection to the internet for couple ms and thats the reason. Dissconecting from local iso and connecting it again, might help.(still testing it).

LucD: Restarting guest always means disconecting from iso. If i want to connect to iso on local disk i have to turn on or restart machine and mount iso after it.

I've always placed ISO files on storage that was visible to the ESX/ESXi host server (such as a datastore/LUN). With that, you can edit the VM settings and point it to that ISO file for use and not worry about it losing the connection to your system, or any other system for that matter.

For example... I have one datastore on my current ESXi 4.1 host server for use by VM's and such (1TB usable)... I have a directory within that where I keep all my ISO files (mostly OS install iso files)... I simply have to tell the VM to use a specific ISO file as it's cd/dvd and boot up off of it to install an OS. This method makes for FAST OS installs since it's all local and not slowed down by either LAN or physical optical drive speeds. A typical OS install takes a fraction of the time it would have taken using the OS install media in the host optical drive. I do this for both Linux and Windows VM's when creating a new one (and not deploying from a template)...

    VMware VCP4

    Hi,

Thanks for this advise, im uploading iso right now to one of two datastores (phisical hd) i got on the server. What if i want to use this datastore also for my VM's? Should i be aware during setting VM to not delete this iso when i set VM disk by leaving some space not accounted ?

    There should be no risk.

I would advise to create a folder, for example called ISO, on the datastore and copy your ISO files in there.

As long as you don't create a guest with the displayname ISO, the files of the guests will not even be mixed with the ISO files in the same folder.
