    Hi Guys,

I'm using vSphere Replication 5.5. to replicate a couple of VMs including MQ SQL, AD and Exchange in the same vCenter environment to different datastore. These VMs are replicating using MS Volume Shadow Services (VSS). Now I also want to backup these VMs using Veeam B&R 7, but I need help to understand what could be the best practice to replicate VMs as well backup using Veeam Backup.

Can I add these VMs into Veeam Backup Job (Enabled "application aware image processing")  without any further changes or do I need to disable VSS on vSphere Replication and enable it just on Veeam Backup?

Can someone please suggest the best approach.

    Regards,

    MQ

Currently I am using Ahsay Software. It is designed for managed backup service providers to backup virtual machines, databases and servers. I think you can check this software. Thanks

Hi thanks for the reply. I'm already using Veeam Backup. I want to backup virtual machine using Veeam but that machine is also being replicated to different datastore using VMware vSphere Replication.

My question is typically for SQL Servers. I'm already replicating my SQL Server through VMware Sphere Replication (MS VSS enabled). Now I also want to backup my SQL Server through Veeam by using it's "application aware image processing" *(VSS) feature.

Is there any best practice to achieve this?

    Regards,

    Hi

I think that the product which have these 2 features in a "single" workflow is Veeam (backup and replication). Trying to analyze your situation:

    1. the first process is replication (every T1 > 15minutes) -> this feature could be realized with VR, Veeam, EMC RecoverPoint (Virtual), Zerto,...

    2. the second process (every T2 > T1 >= 12h) is the backup. This process could be hard for your virtual environment, and the choices are: realize a backup in virtual infrastructure or realize an application backup. SQL could be a problem in virtual environment because database consistency could not be guaranteed in every backup jobs.

For this reason in my environment I use replication to bring workload out of the box (storage or datacenter) and an application backup job every 24h using EMC2 Avamar for critical parts or to guarantee many retentions.

In your environment I suggest to use Veeam for every jobs: replication and backup, because these 2 actions will be coordinated by a single director, to avoid VSS problems.

    Regards

Just make sure that only one of software takes care about transaction logs in order to avoid failures and conflicts. Besides that, you're good to go.

    Cheers.
