  • 1.  Are there any VMWare based virtual solution for EMC Storage?

    Posted Jan 27, 2015 05:50 AM

Hi, I am taking rudimentary EMC Storage class, and know very little about it, but I use VMWare ESX 5.5, vCenter and other stuff and setup my VMWare Lab at home, I am amazed by the virtual technology, so I want to know if EMC provide any virtual appliance solution so I can practice EMC VNX?  the class I am taking is called EMC ISM Storage.\

       Thank you so much!

There's a VNX simulator for file available from EMC. Login to https://support.emc.com/ (if you don't have an account yet, simply create one), and search for "VNX Simulator" (including the double-quotes). The latest version (8.1.0.15) can then be found under "Support-Tools" as a .zip archive or an .ova package.

Thanks, I downloaded them last night, but when I unzip the zip file, it told me the vmdk file is 1400 Tebabytes (is that joke?  I mean this is simulation, you don't need that much? maybe 500 GB is enough fo rsimulation purpose?), so I couldn't unzip to my drive (1TB), lso when I tried to import the ova file, after 60 min, the import only finished 20%, so am I suppose to install this on a gigantic server with over 1500 TB storage?

I am not sure what to do, any suggestion appreciate!

I didn't download and try this simulation yet, but the image size you mentioned does indeed seem to be too big. Can you confirm that the MD5 checksum for the downloaded files match the ones provided with the downloads? Maybe the file(s) were corrupted during the download and that's causing the issues!?

The MD5 checksum does match, and I downloaded it again and tried it, still no good, if you unzip the file, it clearly states it is over 1400 Terabytes.

Strange, VMware doesn't even support that size. Is it the same in the .zip file as well as in the .ova (you can view/extract this with e.g. 7zip)?

thanks, when I use 7zip and unzip the ova file, I am able to import it into VM workstation, but if I import the ova directly, it won't work (may take 3-6hrs based on the progress bar and actual time it spent last night).  I don't know what is going on at EMC, I also download the VNX demo, it simply won't install!

Since I didn't use these demos yet, I can't tell you what's happening. However, I assume that the images are mainly built for importing them on vCenter/ESXi!? I do have other appliances from EMC as well as other vendors which definitely require ESXi as a host, and even with manipulating the .ovf file I wasn't able to run all of them on VMware Workstation.
